FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is OPWDD and who does it serve?
OPWDD is the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities. It funds and coordinates services for individuals with developmental disabilities — including autism, intellectual disability, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other qualifying conditions — from childhood through adulthood.
How do I know if my family member qualifies?
To qualify, a person must have a qualifying developmental disability that began before age 22 and is expected to continue indefinitely, and that significantly affects daily living. The best way to find out is to contact us — we’ll assess your situation at no cost.
What does it cost to work with you?
There is no out-of-pocket cost to most families to get started. Many OPWDD and home care services are funded through Medicaid. We’ll explain exactly how it works for your situation.
What documents do I need to apply?
Typically a psychological evaluation (with IQ and adaptive behavior scores), documentation of the qualifying diagnosis, a recent general medical report, and a social/developmental history showing onset before age 22. For autism, a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation. Don’t have these? We’ll help you get them — often at no cost through an Article 16 Clinic.
What is Self-Direction?
Self-Direction lets you control your OPWDD budget, hire your own providers and staff, and choose the supports that fit your family — with a Support Broker handling the paperwork. It’s available after OPWDD approval and unlocks services like respite, community habilitation, housing, and supported employment.
How long does the OPWDD process take?
Every case is different, and OPWDD makes all determinations. Gathering documents, submitting through a CCO, the eligibility review, and assessments can take several months. We keep your case moving so nothing stalls.
Do you help families who speak Spanish or Russian?
Yes. Our staff supports families in English, Spanish, and Russian throughout the entire process.
What areas do you serve?
We serve families across New York City (all five boroughs), Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk), and Westchester.
